Crispy hake fillets

Van der Lee Seafish has two different kinds of crispy hake fillets. The first one is made of the European hake, which is also known as Merluccius merluccius. The second one is made of the shallow-water Cape hake, which is also known as Merluccius capensis. The type of hake that we use for our breaded hake fillets depends on the demand of our customers.

Catching area

The Cape hake lives along the coast of South Africa, which is also known as FAO fishing area 47. Since this is quite far away from the Netherlands we have to import our Cape hake from South Africa or Namibia. The European hake lives a bit closer to the Netherlands, since it can be found in the Atlantic Ocean. The fish is especially found in the Mediterranean Sea. Since it is not found in the North Sea very often we also have to import our European hake.

However, we can ensure you that our imported hake meets our high standards in terms of quality and food safety, because we know our suppliers personally. Our hake is caught by trawlers and sometimes frozen aboard. However, they can also be frozen onshore. After it is brought to our company in the Netherlands we bread them ourselves in our own advanced production line. As a supplier we sell our crispy hake fillets skinless, pin bone in, breaded and pre-fried. We also have battered hake fillets available at our ‘Added Value’-page and we also provide hake fillets which are not breaded or battered.

Since our crispy hake fillets are breaded, most of the taste come from the breading. However, within this breaded crust you can still taste the delicious, mild and creamy flavour of the fish. One hundred grams of crispy hake fillets contain around 142 calories. They contain a lot of proteins and B-vitamins too, which is the case with every fish product. Normally fish products do not contain carbohydrates, but our crispy hake fillets do because of the breading. However, this may not be considered as a bad thing since carbohydrates are one of the main sources of energy for the human body.

We mainly export our crispy hake fillets to catering industries in Sweden and Germany. However, hake is also very popular in Spain and several other countries. Especially the Cape hake is quite popular in Europe because of its great quality. There are different ways to eat crispy hake fillets. One way is to eat them as fish burgers. However, you can also eat the crispy hake fillets with a sauce or lemon wedges. The most common way to eat breaded hake fillets is probably to eat them as fish and chips. You can also serve them with potato wedges instead of deep-fried chips to keep the dish a bit healthier.
