Crispy Mussel Meat

We have crispy mussels available which are made of the Chilean mussel. This type of mussel is also known as the Mytilus chilensis, the Mytilus edulis platensis and the Chilean blue mussel.

Catching area

As the name already suggests, the Chilean mussel originates from Chile. In this country they farm the mussel ever since the sixties. The Chilean mussel can also be caught at the coasts of Chile and Falkland Islands, but the country prefers to farm it since this will produce even more mussels. The mussels are grown on ropes and harvested throughout the year when their meat is at its best. After the mussels are harvested they are cooked so that their shells will fall off. When they are finished they are transported to our company in the Netherlands where we bread them in our own advanced production line. As a supplier we sell our crispy mussels breaded and pre-fried. We also have cooked mussel meat available which is not breaded at our ‘Fish Worldwide’-page.

Since our crispy mussels are breaded it may taste a bit after the breading. However, when you bite in these mussels you can still taste the pleasant sweet and delicate flavour of the cooked mussel meat. One hundred grams of breaded mussels contain around 220 calories. They also contain some carbohydrates because of the breadcrumbs. Crispy mussels contain a lot of proteins too, and they are also an excellent source of iron and B vitamins. They especially contain a lot of vitamin B12, which is necessary for a healthy nervous system, the formation of red blood cells and for a proper growth and development. We mainly export our crispy mussels to Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. However, some of them stay in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands breaded mussels can be bought at take-out food outlets. People often eat them here with French fries as a side dish. Breaded mussel meat can also be eaten as a side dish with a soup and a salad. But you can also just serve them with lemon wedges to add more flavour. Crispy mussels are also perfect as an appetizer, which is why they are also often used in some tapas in Mediterranean countries.
